Have you ever wondered how mahjong tiles are made?

Join us for our Mahjong Painting Workshop on June 27: learn about the materials and processes behind these iconic tiles, and paint your own to take home!

Mahjong is a traditional game that has connected people intergenerationally for hundreds of years. The most vital part of the game is the tile itself: traditionally made of wood, ivory, or bamboo.

Handmade mahjong tile making was dubbed a form of Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014. The process involves cutting, polishing, carving, and colouring each tile.

Join Agnes from the Vancouver Mahjong Club as they lead you through the process of colouring your own tiles, with guides provided by Kanghong Digital Image (HK) Ltd.! You'll witness generations' worth of technique and skill with guidance from Karen Aruba (online), the daughter of Cheung Sing Chung — one of the last traditional mahjong makers.
