About the performers:

The flamenco duo of Melón Jiménez (guitar) and Lara Wong (flute and bansuri) comes to Vancouver from Madrid, where this groundbreaking couple resides. Their flamenco music is infused with jazz and myriad other influences spanning several countries, including — interestingly enough — India (Lara's flute is a bamboo instrument used in Hindustani classical music, while Melón has toured with Anoushka Shankar, daughter of sitar great Ravi Shankar).

Melón is one of the most notable guitarists in the current flamenco and world music scene in Spain today. He is both devoted to the tradition of his Andalusian gypsy roots and also, to the innovation of the flamenco guitar, meticulously translating techniques from the sitar, slide guitar, and African gimbri to his guitar. He is joined by award winning flautist Lara Wong, a fresh and distinctive voice in the flamenco scene who is breaking new grounds in flamenco with the bansuri flute. On this very special occasion, they will be joined by renowned Vancouver percussionist, Curtis Andrews on the South Indian mridangam drum.
